Annika steps up

A nice note of regret from James Jeffrey to say his new job as speechwriter for Anthony Albanese set the festival kaleidoscope whirring once again, as we went back to the planning table to make sure we’re bringing you the very best sessions we can.

Well, it didn’t take long to see a solution right there under our noses.

Annika Smethurst was down to host the conversation with James on Sunday 11 August; Annika agreed to come to Bendigo to do this session as well as a conversation with Troy Bramston about his Menzies book, before the events of earlier this month put her very much in the spotlight.

So, we’re delighted that now, at 3pm on Sunday, Annika will be in conversation herself - talking about the Australian Federal Police raids on her home following her stories written about mooted cyber-security laws. As you know, this has become a real flash-point for media organisations and journalists who are concerned that attacks on journalists’ rights to protect sources are dangerous.

So, while we’re disappointed not to have these two excellent writers talking together, we are really pleased that now you will have the opportunity to hear Annika speak about this important issue.

That’s what we love about the Festival: it is alive, lively and urgent. And very adaptable because we have to be!!
