Wimmera by Mark Brandi
Few debut novels have had the impact of Mark Brandi's Wimmera. This story set in the north country of Central Victoria took out the UK Crime Writers' Association Debut Dagger, and has gone on to gather ever more fans here in Australia.
Moving between 1989 and a summer where secrets are buried, and 20 years later when one man must remember and confront that past, Wimmera is rural noir at its very best.
Mark Brandi was a very popular participant at Festival 2017, and we were delighted when he agreed to host our Whipstick project for 2018. He conducted a workshop in the Eaglehawk Mechanics Institute building on the edge of the Whipstick forest, with five participants, and is currently assisting them to develop their stories. By August, those stories will be gathered in a small book, Whipstick, which we'll launch at the Festival.
